More Information About Plan B One-Step Emergency Contraceptive
Plan B One-Step Emergency Contraceptive provides a backup form of birth control that may be used after unprotected sex or when a regular form of birth control has failed. Plan B is safe and effective when used as directed, and it works best the sooner it is taken.
How It Works
Much like birth-control pills, Plan B temporarily delays ovulation. The medication must be taken within 72 hours following unprotected sex to be effective. Plan B is not an abortion pill and will not harm an existing pregnancy.
No Impact on Future Pregnancies
Plan B does not affect future fertility. For individuals who are not ready to become pregnant now but may hope to in the future, taking Plan B will not impact the ability to conceive later.
What Are the Side Effects of Plan B?
It is possible to experience changes in menstruation after taking Plan B, including a period that is heavier or lighter than normal, or earlier or later than expected. You may be pregnant if your period is more than one week late. Take a pregnancy test and contact a healthcare provider.
Other potential side effects may include vomiting, breast tenderness, dizziness, lower-abdominal cramps, headache, and nausea.
What Should I Avoid After Taking Plan B?
You may take Plan B with or without food. Plan B does not affect other methods of birth control, so you can continue using your usual form of contraception.
