California Community Colleges Launch Wellness Vending Machine Grant Program
California is pioneering new approaches to improve student wellness through wellness vending machines. According to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, 17 community colleges received $15,000 one-time grants to install vending machines stocked with OTC medications, menstrual supplies, and emergency contraception.
The Pilot Program
The initiative, funded through Assembly Bill 2482, provided $255,000 in total awards across selected campuses. The machines are intended to improve:
-
Access — 24/7 availability of essential health products
-
Equity — reducing disparities among students who may not afford or access supplies otherwise
-
Privacy — offering discreet purchasing of sensitive items
Impact on Student Wellness
This program acknowledges that access to affordable health products directly affects student performance, retention, and equity. By placing wellness vending machines on campus, California colleges are taking a proactive step in addressing basic student needs.
